How to calculate share of voice: Formulas, worked examples, pitfalls

Share of voice is your brand's count divided by a total, over a period. In ads it is your spend or impressions over the market's; in SEO, your estimated clicks over the total for a keyword set; in AI answers, the answers that name you over all answers read. Always report the count and the total, not just the share.

Key facts

Share of voice sounds like one number. It is at least three, depending on the channel, and in AI search it splits again into two definitions that can differ by a wide margin on the same data. This post gives the formulas, works them on real numbers from our own workspace, and lists the choices that make two SOV numbers incomparable. For the one-line definition, see the glossary entry.

What is the share of voice formula?

Every version has the same shape:

share of voice = your count ÷ total count, over a period

What changes is what you count.

  • Paid ads

    Your count
    Your spend, or your impressions
    Total count
The market's spend, or all impressions in the auction
  • SEO

    Your count
Your estimated clicks or visibility for a keyword set
    Total count
The estimated total for the same keyword set
  • Social and PR

    Your count
    Mentions of your brand
    Total count
Mentions of all brands in the category
  • AI answers

    Your count
    Answers that name your brand
    Total count
Answers read (rate), or all brand mentions (pie)

The first three are long established. The fourth is new, and it is where most of the confusion is.

How do you calculate share of voice for SEO?

SEO share of voice estimates what fraction of the clicks available on a set of keywords goes to you.

  1. Pick the keyword set. The searches that matter to your business, with their monthly search volume.
  2. Find your position for each keyword.
  3. Estimate the clicks each position gets, using a click-through curve: the expected share of searchers who click each position.
  4. Sum your estimated clicks across the set.
  5. Divide by the total estimated clicks across all positions for the same set.

Two cautions. The click curve is an estimate, and AI Overviews and other features above the results change it for many queries. And the result depends entirely on the keyword set, so it is only comparable to itself over time. For the underlying ranking data, see how to track SEO rankings.

How do you calculate share of voice in AI answers?

Start with a set of questions buyers ask, read the answers on each engine, and count.

There are two definitions:

  • Rate: answers naming you ÷ all answers read.
  • Pie: your mentions ÷ mentions of every tracked brand.

The rate asks "in what fraction of answers were you named?" The pie asks "what fraction of all brand mentions were yours?" They sound similar and behave very differently.

How does ChatGPT itself define share of voice?

Asked how to measure it on 4 October 2026, ChatGPT gave the pie and told the reader to report presence rate beside it, which is the rate. It cited seven explainers, none of them ours: across 114 answers to this question in 30 days, we were named in none.

Question: how to measure share of voice in AI answers

ChatGPT answered: If by share of voice (SOV) in AI answers you mean “how much of the category conversation does my brand own when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, etc.?”—the cleanest approach is to measure brand mentions against competitor mentions across a fixed prompt set. … The cleanest competitive definition is: AI SOV = your brand mentions ÷ total mentions of all tracked brands × 100. … This is a zero-sum metric: the tracked brands add up to 100%. But also report presence rate separately: Presence rate = answers mentioning your brand ÷ total answers.

In paid search the cleanest version is impression share, which ad platforms report directly: the impressions your ads received divided by the impressions they were eligible to receive. It answers "of the auctions I could have shown in, how many did I show in?", which is a share of your own opportunity rather than of the market.

For a market view, divide your impressions or spend by an estimate of the category's total, from a competitive intelligence tool or your own research. That estimate carries more error than your own numbers, so present it as a range, and keep the method fixed between reports so the trend is meaningful even when the level is uncertain.

How do you choose the question set for AI share of voice?

The question set is the denominator's foundation, so it deserves more care than the formula.

  • Use buyers' words. Write questions the way a buyer would type or say them, not the way your product pages phrase things.
  • Cover the buying stages. Problem questions ("how do I…"), category questions ("best X for Y"), comparison questions ("X vs Y") and brand questions. Weight them by how close each stage is to a decision.
  • Keep brand questions separate. They inflate the rate and tell you little. Report them on their own line.
  • Freeze it. Add questions as new rows; never edit the wording of an existing one, or its history stops being comparable.
  • Review quarterly. Drop questions nobody asks any more, and add the ones your sales calls keep hearing.

Thirty to sixty well-chosen questions usually give a more useful number than three hundred loosely chosen ones.

What does a worked example look like?

Here are real numbers from our own workspace: 61 tracked questions about our category, read on ChatGPT and Perplexity from 2026-09-04 to 2026-10-04, with 24 of 31 days sampled. In total 4,524 answers were read. The table at the top of this page has the count for each of the six most-named brands, each worked both ways.

Take the rate column first. Semrush was named in 1,621 answers: 1,621 ÷ 4,524 = 0.358. We were named in 197: 197 ÷ 4,524 = 0.044. These rates do not add up to one. They are not supposed to: many answers name several brands, and many name none of these. An answer listing Semrush, Profound and Ahrefs counts once for each.

Now the pie, using only these six brands. Total mentions: 1,621 + 1,420 + 1,171 + 988 + 967 + 197 = 6,364. Our pie share is 197 ÷ 6,364 = 0.031.

Add a seventh competitor to the tracking list, one that was named in 900 answers, and the pie total becomes 7,264. Our pie share drops to 197 ÷ 7,264 = 0.027. Nothing about the answers changed. We edited a settings page.

That is why we use the rate. Our own documentation puts it this way: the pie's denominator "would be the competitor list you typed", and "a number that moves when you edit a settings page is not a measurement".

Decide and write it down. We count a mention when the brand name appears in the answer text, whether or not there is a link. A citation is separate: a link to your domain. A model can recommend you at length and never link you, or link your page while naming someone else.

Keep them as two numbers. In the same workspace, our pricing page was cited in 42 of 57 ChatGPT answers to one pricing question in which we were named in none. Blending the two would have hidden that.

Does one engine name us more than the other?

The same 61 questions, read in ChatGPT and in Perplexity, counted apart. The two name attensira.com at about the same rate; a gap this small is inside the noise, so it is not a finding.

What are the pitfalls that make SOV numbers wrong?

Counting failed runs. If an engine errors and you count it as an answer that did not name you, an outage looks like a drop. Exclude failed runs from the total; they lower the sample size, not the rate.

Ignoring the sample size. A rate of 0.2 on ten answers and a rate of 0.2 on a thousand are different readings. Always show the total beside the share.

Calling noise a trend. With small samples, the rate moves by chance. Test changes before you report them. We use a two-proportion z-test at 95% confidence; a change that does not clear it is reported as no change we can prove.

Mixing engines. Engines draw on different sources. An overall rate can hide that you are strong on one and absent on another. Compute it per engine first.

Mixing countries. Answers differ by market. Keep each country separate, or say clearly that you blended them.

Brand names that are ordinary words. If your brand is "Linear" or "Notion", a naive match counts every unrelated use of the word. Read a sample of answers before trusting the rate.

Changing the question set. Adding easy brand questions raises your rate without changing anything real. Our own 197 named answers all came from the three questions that contain our name; on the other 58 questions, the rate was zero (0 of 4,326 answers). Report brand and non-brand questions separately.

Does the blended rate hide a weak engine?

Compute the rate per engine before you blend. On our 4,524 answers the two engines sit close together, and when either names us it puts us first. A blend would hide little here; in a category where one engine ignores you, it would hide everything.

Does sampling more often change the number?

It should not change the rate, only its precision. Reading each question three times a day instead of once triples both the numerator and the denominator. What you buy is a smaller margin of error, which lets you see smaller real changes sooner. If a tool's share of voice jumps when you raise the sampling, something is being counted wrong.

How should you report share of voice?

A good report line has five parts: the share, the count, the total, the window and the scope.

Named in 197 of 4,524 answers (0.044), ChatGPT and Perplexity, 61 questions, 2026-09-04 to 2026-10-04.

Anything less invites misreading. "Share of voice: 0.04" without the rest could mean almost anything.

How does Attensira calculate share of voice?

Attensira computes share of voice as the rate this post recommends: successful answers naming you divided by all successful answers in the window, with failed runs excluded, per engine on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI, with Gemini from Growth. Every rate is shown with its sample size, every change is tested before it is called a change, and an engine you do not track is shown as unmeasured, not zero. Competitor rates use the same denominator, so the board never moves because you edited the competitor list.

The number is the start, not the job. The crew then works the questions where you are not named, with your approval: that is the service of an SEO agency at the price of a tool. See prompt tracking, or run the free audit for a first reading.

What else do people ask?

What is the basic share of voice formula?
Share of voice is your brand's count divided by a total, over a period. In advertising the count is your ad spend or impressions and the total is the market's. In SEO it is your estimated clicks or visibility over the total for a keyword set. In AI answers it is the answers that name you over the answers read.
Should share of voice add up to a whole across competitors?
Only in the pie definition, where you divide by every tracked brand's mentions. That version depends on which competitors you chose to track, so adding one lowers everyone's share. The rate definition, answers naming you divided by all answers, does not add up across brands but only moves when the answers move.
How many answers do I need to calculate AI share of voice?
More than a handful. A rate built on ten answers moves in large steps by chance. Report the number of answers behind every share, and treat a change as real only when it clears a significance test for the sample sizes involved.
Is AI share of voice comparable between tools?
Usually not. Tools differ on whether they use the rate or the pie, whether a link without the name counts, which engines and countries they read, and how often they sample. Compare numbers only within one tool and one method.
Does sampling a question more often change the share of voice?
It should not change the rate, only its confidence. Reading a question three times instead of once triples both the answers naming you and the answers read, so the share holds while the sample size grows.

Where do these facts come from?

2 sources, 4 statements: each statement with the page it came from and the day it was checked.

  1. Attensira defines share of voice as successful runs naming the brand divided by all successful runs in the window, a rate that does not sum to 100 percent across brands.

    docs.attensira.com · retrieved

  2. Attensira does not use the version that sums to one, because its denominator would be the competitor list the user typed.

    docs.attensira.com · retrieved

  3. Failed runs are excluded from the denominator, so a model outage lowers the sample size rather than the rate.

    docs.attensira.com · retrieved

  4. Deltas in Attensira are tested with a two-proportion z-test at 95 percent, and a change below that noise floor reads as no change it can prove.
