**In short:** Google Search Console is Google's free service for website owners to see how their site performs in Google Search: clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position per query and page, which pages are indexed, and problems Google found. Since 31 August 2026 it also reports impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows nothing about other AI engines.

**ChatGPT, asked 2026-10-03:** "how to track AI search visibility"

> This has changed substantially: Google now provides a Generative AI performance report in Search Console covering visibility in AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says the reporting rolled out worldwide by August 31, 2026.

## Key facts

- Also known as: GSC; formerly Google Webmaster Tools
- Covers: Google Search only, incl. AI Overviews and AI Mode
- History kept by Google: Sixteen months
- Related metric: [Click-through rate](/glossary/click-through-rate)
- In Attensira: [A plugin; 16-month backfill on connect](https://docs.attensira.com/measure/google-search)

## What can Search Console see, and what can't it?

Here is one question seen through two lenses. We track "how to track AI search visibility" for attensira.com. On one side, what ChatGPT and Perplexity did with it over the 30 days to 4 October 2026, read over the Attensira MCP. On the other, whether any of it would show up in Search Console:

| What happened | Count | In Search Console? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Answers read to "how to track AI search visibility" | 108 (ChatGPT 57, Perplexity 51) | no |
| Of those, answers that named Attensira | 0 | no |
| Of those, answers that linked attensira.com | 0 | no |
| Our pages shown in Google results or AI Overviews | not read for this page | yes |

Search Console is the authoritative record of Google. It is blind to everything else, and for a growing share of buyers "everything else" is where the shortlist gets made. Had any of those 108 answers named or linked us, it would not have left a row in any Google report either. Even the answer at the top of this page, ChatGPT explaining Search Console's own AI report, sits outside it. The workspace-wide totals are on [AI search performance](/glossary/ai-search-performance).

That is not a flaw in Search Console. It is a reminder that it answers one question, "how do we do in Google?", very well, and no other.

## What is Google Search Console?

Google's free service for website owners. After you verify ownership of a site, it reports:

- **Performance:** clicks, impressions, [click-through rate](/glossary/click-through-rate) and average position, by query, page, country, device and date.

- **Generative AI performance:** impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google's help centre says this report was rolled out to all websites worldwide as of 31 August 2026. Traffic from AI features also sits inside the ordinary Web search totals. See [AI Overview](/glossary/ai-overview).

- **Indexing:** which pages are indexed, which are not and why; URL inspection with the canonical Google chose. See [crawling and indexing](/glossary/crawling-indexing).

- **Sitemaps:** submitted [XML sitemaps](/glossary/xml-sitemaps) and how many URLs were discovered.

- **Experience:** [Core Web Vitals](/glossary/core-web-vitals) from real Chrome users.

- **Problems:** manual actions, security issues and structured data errors.

## What are its limits?

- **Sixteen months of history.** Google keeps sixteen months and drops the oldest day daily. A day that falls off cannot be read again.

- **Top rows only.** The Search Analytics API returns up to 25,000 rows per request, 1,000 by default, and does not guarantee every row. Rare queries can vanish from exports.

- **Lag and revision.** Recent days arrive a few days late and change for a day or two.

- **Privacy filtering.** Some rare queries are hidden to protect searchers.

- **Google only.** Nothing from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or any engine outside Google. See [AI search performance](/glossary/ai-search-performance).

## Which pages does Perplexity cite when asked how to track AI visibility?

Mostly AI-visibility vendors, Semrush first, with Search Engine Land and HubSpot's blog among them. None of the 515 citations went to attensira.com, and Attensira was named in none of the 108 answers across both engines. No Google report would show any of this: a citation in Perplexity leaves no row in Search Console.

**Perplexity sources: how to track AI visibility** (Perplexity, 51 answers, 2026-09-05 to 2026-10-04, n=515 citations)

| | Citations | Share |
| --- | --- | --- |
| semrush.com | 61 | 11.8% |
| searchable.com | 47 | 9.1% |
| searchengineland.com | 44 | 8.5% |
| seranking.com | 40 | 7.8% |
| tryprofound.com | 34 | 6.6% |
| blog.hubspot.com | 31 | 6.0% |
| attensira.com | 0 | 0.0% |

## How does Attensira use Search Console?

As one record beside the AI answers. Attensira's [Search Console integration](https://docs.attensira.com/measure/google-search) handles the limits above:

- On first connection it pulls the full sixteen months, oldest days first, because they are the ones about to be lost, at up to 30 days an hour.

- Every day after, it pulls the day three days back and re-pulls the two days before it, so provisional figures settle before anyone compares them.

- It keeps every stored day, so your history grows past Google's sixteen months.

- If the connection breaks, an inbox item asks you to reconnect, and missed days fill in afterwards.

- A number that was never pulled shows as a dash with its reason, never as zero.

Then a page's Google clicks and impressions sit next to how often AI answers cite it, read on the same days.

## What are the objections about Search Console and AI search?

**"Search Console covers AI now."** Google's own AI surfaces, yes. Other assistants, no.

**"We'll export it when we need it."** Days older than sixteen months are gone. Store it continuously.

**"Average position tells us where we rank."** It is an average over every impression, across devices and countries. Read it per query, with impressions beside it.

**"We don't need it if we track AI answers."** Google is still where much of the discovery happens, and its index feeds AI Overviews. Read both.

## How does Attensira put it to work?

Attensira connects Search Console as a plugin, keeps your Google history day by day beside your AI answers, and lets its crew see which pages win in Google but lose in AI answers, or the reverse. The crew then fixes those pages and ships each change after your approval, measured before and after. The connection is documented step by step in [Google Search](https://docs.attensira.com/measure/google-search), and [citation tracking](/features/citation-tracking) covers the AI side of the same pages.

## FAQ

### What is Google Search Console?

It is Google's free tool for site owners. Once you verify a site, it shows how the site performs in Google Search, with clicks, impressions, CTR and average position by query, page, country and device, plus which pages are indexed, Core Web Vitals and problems Google found.

### How many rows of performance data can I get out of it?

Through the Search Analytics API, up to 25,000 rows per request, 1,000 by default, and Google says it does not guarantee to return every row, only the top ones. Long-tail queries can be missing from exports for that reason.

### How far back does Search Console data go?

Sixteen months. Google drops the oldest day every day. Attensira's Search Console integration pulls the full sixteen months on first connection, oldest days first, and keeps every stored day after that, so its history grows past Google's limit.

### Can Search Console tell me whether ChatGPT or Claude cited my page?

No. It reports Google Search only. Since 31 August 2026 its generative AI report shows impressions in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, but ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude report nothing to it. For those, answers have to be sampled.

### Why do recent numbers change after I look at them?

Because Google reports with a lag of a few days and revises the newest days for a day or two. Attensira's integration pulls the day three days back and re-pulls the two days before it, replacing them, so provisional figures settle before they are compared.
