**In short:** Conversational search is finding information through a back-and-forth dialogue with an AI assistant instead of typing one query and scanning links. Each follow-up is read in the context of earlier turns, and the assistant may run several searches behind one reply. For brands, the shortlist gets narrower with every turn, so being named early matters.

**ChatGPT, asked 2026-10-03:** "AI visibility for SaaS companies"

> AI visibility matters because buyers increasingly use conversational AI to research vendors and compare solutions before visiting websites. ChatGPT search, for example, can provide answers with linked sources, creating new discovery paths beyond traditional search.

Attensira: not named.

## What does a conversational answer look like?

It is written to be continued. We read two stored ChatGPT answers from 3 October 2026 over the Attensira MCP, and both end by handing the next turn back to the person:

| Question | How the ChatGPT answer ended |
| --- | --- |
| AI visibility for SaaS companies | "I can also provide a SaaS AI visibility audit framework, checklist, or 90-day GTM strategy if you want to apply this to a specific SaaS category." |
| how to get recommended by AI | "If you mean getting personally recommended by AI as an expert, getting your business recommended, or getting products recommended in AI shopping results, the strategy is slightly different." |

The second answer also opened by restating the question in fuller form before answering it. Both treat the first reply as a draft: the person's next message decides what the assistant does next.

The first answer, at the top of this page, uses the term itself: buyers "use conversational AI to research vendors and compare solutions before visiting websites." In the 30 days to 4 October 2026 the engines gave 112 answers to that question, and none named Attensira. For a brand, the question you are tracked on is often not the one that decides the purchase. The second and third turns are.

## What is conversational search?

Finding information through a dialogue with an AI assistant. You ask; it answers in prose; your follow-up is read in the light of everything said so far. "Which of those integrates with HubSpot?" makes sense only because the previous answer listed some tools.

It differs from classic search in three ways:

| | Classic search | Conversational search |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Input | One query, often keywords | A sequence of natural-language questions |
| Context | Each query stands alone | Earlier turns shape the next answer |
| Output | Links to choose from | Prose that narrows a shortlist turn by turn |

## How does an assistant carry the conversation?

By resending it. Language models do not remember between requests. The application puts the earlier turns back into the model's [context window](/glossary/context-window) with each new message, alongside any pages it retrieves for the new turn. Current large models have windows of around a million tokens, so ordinary conversations fit, but very long ones still lose detail at the edges.

Behind one reply there may be several searches. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, issuing multiple related searches across subtopics to develop a response. A follow-up can pull in sources the first answer never touched, which is why a brand absent from turn one can still appear in turn three, and the reverse.

## What does conversational search change for brands?

- **The shortlist narrows each turn.** Turn one may name five options; turn two compares three; turn three recommends one. Being named early keeps you in the conversation.

- **Follow-up questions are predictable.** After "what is X" come "how does X compare to Y", "how much does X cost", "is X good for my situation". Each needs a page that answers it directly. See [search intent](/glossary/search-intent).

- **Questions get longer and more specific.** People type full sentences and add their own constraints. That is [long-tail](/glossary/long-tail-keywords) demand, phrased as conversation.

- **The brand must travel inside the answer.** In a multi-turn chat, the source links fade and the names carry forward. If the passage the assistant used did not name you, the next turn will not either.

## Does the next turn draw on the same sources on every engine?

No. On "how to get recommended by AI", ChatGPT leaned on OpenAI's own help pages, while Perplexity's most-cited source was trysight.ai, a third-party site. A follow-up asked on one engine is answered from a different library than the same follow-up on the other. In 117 answers over 30 days, neither engine named Attensira; the most-named brand, AIclicks, appeared once.

**"how to get recommended by AI": who the answers leaned on, 5 Sep to 4 Oct 2026**

| Engine | Answers read | Citations attached | Most-cited source |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | 57 | 1,976 | help.openai.com (392) |
| Perplexity | 60 | 602 | trysight.ai (64) |

## What are the objections to planning for conversational search?

**"We only need to win the first question."** The first question is often generic. The ones that close a decision come later, with more context, and they are where specific pages win.

**"We can't track conversations."** You can track the follow-up questions as questions in their own right: comparison, price, fit. Read each on each engine.

**"Voice and chat are the same thing."** Voice assistants are conversational too, but read one answer aloud with no links. See [voice search](/glossary/voice-search).

**"Long conversations favour big brands."** They favour brands the assistant can say something specific about. Specific, sourced pages give it that.

## How does Attensira handle conversational search?

Attensira tracks the follow-up questions buyers ask, not only the opening one, and reads each on every engine you track, every day. Its crew writes and fixes the pages that answer comparison, price and fit questions with your brand inside the sentence, ships each change after your approval, and measures whether you are named at each step. [Prompt tracking](/features/prompt-tracking) shows how follow-up questions are tracked beside the opening one.

## FAQ

### What is conversational search?

It is searching by talking to an AI assistant: you ask, it answers, and your next question builds on what was said. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google's AI Mode all work this way. The assistant keeps the earlier turns in view while it answers the next one.

### What makes a search conversational rather than a query?

Context carried between turns. 'Which of those is cheapest?' only makes sense after a list. A conversational system resolves 'those' from the earlier answer; a classic search box treats every query as new.

### How is the earlier conversation actually carried?

By sending it again. Language models do not remember between requests, so the application puts the earlier turns back into the model's context window with each new message. That is why very long conversations eventually lose their earliest details.

### Does a follow-up turn trigger a fresh search?

Often. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one response. A follow-up can therefore pull in sources the first answer never used.

### What does conversational search change about how I write?

Write for the second and third question, not only the first. Buyers ask what something is, then how it compares, then what it costs and whether it fits them. Pages that answer each of those directly, with your brand in the sentence, can be pulled in at every turn.
