> Click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions. How Google counts both, why AI answers push CTR down, and what CTR cannot see in ChatGPT or Perplexity.

**In short:** Click-through rate (CTR) is the share of impressions that turn into clicks: clicks divided by impressions. In Google Search Console, an impression is a link to your site shown on a results page and a click is someone leaving Google for your page. AI answers lower CTR by answering in place, and answers outside Google are not counted at all.

**ChatGPT, asked 2026-10-03:** "AI search visibility for marketing teams"

> … AI-search tools increasingly measure mentions, citations, sentiment, and whether your brand is accurately represented, not just rankings and clicks.… your goal isn't merely to get a click from Google; it's to have your company included in the answer when a prospective customer asks an AI system what to buy or who to trust.

## Key facts

- Also known as: CTR
- Formula: Clicks ÷ impressions
- Unit: A value from 0 to 1 in the Search Analytics API
- Counts AI answers outside Google?: [No: no impressions are reported](/glossary/zero-click-search)

## What happens to clicks when an AI answers first?

They fall. The cleanest public measurement is Pew Research Center's. It tracked 68,879 Google searches made by 900 US adults in March 2025:

| What the person saw | Clicked a traditional result | Clicked a link inside the AI summary |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Results with an AI summary | 8% of visits | 1% of visits |
| Results without one | 15% of visits | — |

AI summaries appeared on 18% of those searches. Where they appeared, clicks on ordinary results nearly halved, and almost nobody clicked the summary's own links.

There is a second half to this that CTR cannot show. The answer at the top of this page, ChatGPT's reply on 3 October 2026 to "AI search visibility for marketing teams", read over the Attensira MCP, says it in the engine's own words: the goal is being included in the answer, not only the click. An answer read in ChatGPT or Perplexity is not an impression in Search Console and has no CTR. If you only watch CTR, the place your buyers increasingly read about you is invisible.

## What is click-through rate?

Clicks divided by impressions. If a listing is shown 1,000 times and clicked 30 times, its CTR is 3 in a hundred. It answers one question: once people see this link, how often do they choose it?

In Google [Search Console](/glossary/google-search-console) the terms are defined precisely:

- **Impression:** how often someone saw a link to your site on Google. In ordinary results it counts when the item is on the current page of results, whether or not it was scrolled into view. In carousels and expandable results the item usually has to be scrolled into view or expanded.

- **Click:** how often someone clicked a link from Google to your site. A click that stays inside Google is not a click.

- **CTR:** clicks divided by impressions, returned by the Search Analytics API as a value from 0 to 1.

The API returns at most 25,000 rows per request, 1,000 by default, and does not promise every row, only the top ones. Long-tail queries can go missing from exports for that reason alone.

## Why does CTR fall when impressions rise?

Usually because the impression was earned on a surface that answers the question in place: an [AI Overview](/glossary/ai-overview), a [featured snippet](/glossary/featured-snippets), a knowledge panel, a list of [SERP features](/glossary/serp-features). The denominator counts exposure; the numerator counts departure. Any format that satisfies the reader without a visit lowers the ratio without anything on your page getting worse.

Google now separates some of this. Search Console includes AI feature traffic in its ordinary Web search totals, and since 31 August 2026 its generative AI report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A falling CTR next to rising AI Overview impressions is a [zero-click](/glossary/zero-click-search) pattern, not a broken title tag.

## What can CTR not tell you?

- **Anything outside Google.** ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude report no impressions to you. AI crawlers still read your pages: our pricing page drew 7,724 AI-crawler requests in the 30 days to 4 October 2026, from eight agents including ChatGPT-User and Claude-User, which fetch for a person, and training crawlers, which do not. No CTR report has a row for any of it.

- **Whether you were named.** An AI answer can mention you without a link, so there is nothing to click. That is a [brand mention](/glossary/ai-brand-mentions), and CTR has no column for it.

- **Whether the answer was right.** A high CTR on a page that AI answers misquote is still a problem.

## What does CTR miss on our own site?

Reading that never becomes a click. AI crawlers requested our pricing and contact-sales pages thousands of times in 30 days. Most of it is not an answer being written: site-wide, 91% of AI-crawler requests were Meta's training crawler, and the log gives no per-agent split per page. With no click data read, clicks are unknown, not zero.

| Figure | What it counts | n |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 7,724 | AI-crawler fetches of /pricing | 30 days, of 143,601 AI-crawler requests |
| 9,271 | AI-crawler fetches of /contact-sales | 30 days, of 143,601 AI-crawler requests |
| 8 | AI agents seen on /pricing | including ChatGPT-User and Claude-User; no per-agent counts |

## What are the objections about CTR in AI search?

**"Rewrite titles to recover CTR."** If the drop comes from AI answering in place, a better title helps only the minority who still scroll. Measure where the impressions came from first.

**"Low CTR means low quality."** It can mean the question was answered before anyone needed to click. Read CTR per query type.

**"AI traffic shows up in analytics as referrals, so we are covered."** Only the clicks do. The many answers that used you without a click leave no trace in your analytics.

**"Optimise for clicks from AI answers."** The Pew numbers say those clicks are rare. Optimise to be named in the answer, and treat the click as a bonus.

## How does Attensira measure what CTR misses?

Attensira keeps Search Console clicks, impressions and positions day by day beside what AI answers say about you: whether each answer names you, whether it links you, and which sources it leaned on, each with its sample size. Its crew then works on being named where people read, and ships each change after your approval. [AI search performance](/glossary/ai-search-performance) shows what that report looks like on our own site, and [crawler logs](/features/crawler-logs) show which AI agents read which pages when no click is recorded.

## FAQ

### What is click-through rate?

It is clicks divided by impressions, the share of times people who saw a link to your page clicked it. In search, it is reported per query, page, country and device, and it is the standard way to judge whether a listing earns attention once it is shown.

### How does Google calculate CTR in Search Console?

As clicks divided by impressions. Google's help defines an impression as how often someone saw a link to your site on Google and a click as how often someone clicked a link from Google to your site. The Search Analytics API returns CTR as a number from 0 to 1.

### Does an impression require the user to scroll the result into view?

Not in ordinary results. Google counts an impression whenever an item appears on the current page of results, scrolled into view or not, as long as no click is needed to see more. Carousels and expandable results are the exception: the item usually has to be scrolled into view or expanded.

### Do AI Overviews and AI Mode count toward my CTR?

Yes, inside Google. Google states AI feature traffic is included in Search Console's Web search totals, and as of 31 August 2026 a generative AI report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A click counts only when the person leaves Google for your site.

### Can CTR tell me whether ChatGPT or Perplexity cited me?

No. Assistants outside Google report no impressions to you. In the 30 days to 4 October 2026, AI crawlers of every kind, from training crawlers to agents fetching for a person, requested our pricing page 7,724 times, and none of that appears in any CTR report. Presence in those answers has to be measured by sampling them.
