> AI response optimization is editing the passages an AI answer quotes so the answer is correct and names you. How it works, with two real answers as the example.

**In short:** AI response optimization is shaping the passages an AI assistant lifts into its answers, so the response it writes is accurate and names your brand. It works on sentences and sections, not pages: each passage answers one question completely, carries its own subject and qualifier, and stays true when quoted alone.

**ChatGPT, asked 2026-10-03:** "best answer engine optimization tools"

> If by Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) you mean optimizing your brand/content to appear in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews/AI Mode, and Copilot, these are the tools I’d shortlist in 2026. … If you're choosing one today, I'd start with Peec or Profound rather than buying a traditional SEO tool solely for its new "AI visibility" feature.

## Key facts

- Close to: Answer engine optimization (AEO)
- Unit: A passage or a sentence, not a page
- Part of: [Generative engine optimization](/generative-engine-optimization)
- Measured by: [Named rate and cited rate, kept apart](/glossary/ai-brand-mentions)

## What does an unoptimized response look like?

It looks like being read and not credited. Here is one question from our own attensira.com workspace, asked of both engines every day, read over the Attensira MCP on 4 October 2026 for the 30 days from 5 September:

| Question | Engine | Answers | Cited attensira.com | Named Attensira |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| GEO tool that opens pull requests | ChatGPT | 12 | 4 | 0 |
| GEO tool that opens pull requests | Perplexity | 12 | 0 | 0 |

Opening pull requests is one way our crew ships a fix, so this is a question we should own. ChatGPT used an attensira.com page as a source in 4 of its 12 answers and never wrote our name. Its 3 October answer named three other products, each in one self-contained sentence saying what it does with pull requests. Our page was consulted; their sentences were the ones that could be lifted whole. The passage was useful enough to cite and anonymous enough to quote without us. That is the precise gap AI response optimization works on.

## What is AI response optimization?

It is the passage-level part of [generative engine optimization](/generative-engine-optimization). Access, sources and measurement get you read. Response optimization decides what the engine does with what it read: whether the sentence it lifts is correct on its own, and whether your brand is inside it.

The unit is small. Anthropic's [Citations documentation](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/build-with-claude/citations) states that plain text and PDF documents are chunked into sentences, so a model can cite a single sentence. Retrieval systems [chunk](/glossary/chunking) pages into sections before scoring them. Either way, the page is a container and the passage is the thing that competes.

## How do you optimize a passage for an AI response?

Five rules, each aimed at a specific failure.

**Answer first.** Under a heading phrased as the question, the first one or two sentences answer it completely. An engine that lifts only those sentences has the answer.

**Carry your own subject.** "It", "this tool" and "the plan" point at something the quoted sentence does not contain. Write the noun. If the noun is your product, the name travels with the quote.

**Put the brand in the claim.** "Plans are priced per seat" can be quoted without you. "Ledgerly's plans are priced per seat", for a made-up brand called Ledgerly, cannot. It reads slightly more formal on the page and very differently in an answer.

**Keep the qualifier in the same sentence.** A caveat in the next paragraph is a caveat in a different chunk. If a number needs a date, a sample size or a condition, it goes in the sentence with the number.

**State facts as literal text.** Versions, prices, dates and names written as text can be matched exactly. Values that live only in an image, a tab or a script often are not read.

## Which passages did ChatGPT lean on for that question?

Over 30 days, ChatGPT's 57 answers to this question attached 2,481 citations. The most-used source was otterly.ai, a vendor's own list, at 368; roundups such as aeo-rankings.com and xseek.io followed. attensira.com was attached 0 times. The engine quotes whoever has already written the answer to this exact question.

## How is this different from featured snippet optimization?

They share a habit, the direct answer under a question heading, and differ in the reward. A [featured snippet](/glossary/featured-snippets) shows your passage with your page's link and title, so your brand travels with it automatically. An AI response blends several sources into new sentences. Your words can be paraphrased, your link can sit in a footnote, and your name can vanish entirely, as the pull-request question in the first section shows. Response optimization has to put the brand inside the claim, because nothing else will carry it.

## Does Google want a special format for AI answers?

No. Google's [AI features documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need new machine-readable files or markup. That is consistent with this page: the work is editorial, on passages people can read too.

The research supports that editorial work can move answers. The 2023 [GEO paper](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735) reports that its content edits raised visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% on its benchmark, with large differences by domain. Treat that as evidence the lever exists, not as a forecast for your site.

## What are the objections to AI response optimization?

**"This makes our pages read like robots wrote them."** Self-contained sentences with real nouns read better to people too. The test is reading a section on its own.

**"We already rank, so the answer will name us."** The pull-request question above cited our page in 4 of 12 ChatGPT answers and named us in none. Being retrieved and being credited are separate outcomes.

**"Stuff the brand name everywhere."** Engines quote the sentence that answers the question. One correct sentence with your name in it beats ten decorative mentions.

**"One rewrite will fix it."** Engines re-read on their own schedules and vary answer to answer. Measure the named rate before and after, per engine, with the sample size.

## How does Attensira do response optimization?

For each question you track, Attensira's crew finds the passages each engine cited, compares them with what the answer said, and rewrites your passage so the sentence it lifts carries your name and its qualifier. The change ships to your site after your approval, and the crew measures named and cited rates separately, before and after. [Content optimization](/features/content-optimization) shows how a rewrite is proposed, approved and shipped.

## FAQ

### What is AI response optimization?

It is editing the passages an AI assistant lifts from your pages so the answer it writes is correct and names you. The unit is the passage or sentence: each one answers a single question, carries its own subject and qualifier, and is still true when quoted on its own.

### How is this different from GEO?

Scope. Generative engine optimization, named in a 2023 paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, is the whole discipline of improving visibility in generated answers, including access, sources and measurement. Response optimization is the passage-level part: what the lifted sentence has to look like.

### What is the unit that actually gets selected?

A passage, and often a sentence. Anthropic's Citations documentation states that plain text and PDF documents are chunked into sentences, so the smallest citable unit is a single sentence. The page is the container; the sentence is what gets quoted.

### Does Google want separate optimization for AI Overviews?

No. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need new machine-readable files or markup. Eligibility is being indexed and snippet-eligible; the rest is how well a passage answers.

### Is there evidence that editing content changes generated answers?

The GEO paper (arXiv 2311.09735, first submitted 16 November 2023) reports that its optimization methods can boost visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, with effects varying by domain. It is a benchmark result, not a guarantee for any one site.
