**In short:** Google AI Overviews draws on Google's ordinary search index: an indexed, snippet-eligible page can be a supporting link, and Search Console settings control it. ChatGPT search depends on OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot: disallow it and your pages leave ChatGPT's search answers. Google now reports AI appearances in Search Console; OpenAI documents no equivalent report.

## Verdict

One difference explains the rest. AI Overviews is a feature of Google Search, built on the index you already manage and controlled from Search Console. ChatGPT search depends on a separate crawler you must allow and is controlled from robots.txt. The work on pages is shared; the access and measurement work is not.

### Does ranking on Google carry over to ChatGPT?

Not automatically, and ChatGPT says so itself. Asked "why is my brand not mentioned by AI" on 3 October 2026, it separated Google rankings from AI answers outright. The access step is one reason; which third-party pages each surface trusts is the other.

Stored ChatGPT answer to “why is my brand not mentioned by AI”, asked 3 Oct 2026 (n=1 answer, attensira.com workspace, Attensira MCP).

> If your brand is not being mentioned by AI systems (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI search summaries, etc.), it usually means the AI cannot confidently discover, verify, or justify recommending your brand. AI visibility is different from traditional SEO rankings: a brand can rank well on Google and still be absent from AI answers.

### What does the other engine advise for the same question?

Perplexity, asked "how to get cited by ChatGPT" the same day, added a step ChatGPT left out of its first answer, being indexed by major search engines. That step serves both surfaces. Only ChatGPT also needs its own crawler let in.

Stored Perplexity answer to “how to get cited by ChatGPT”, asked 3 Oct 2026 (n=1 answer, attensira.com workspace, Attensira MCP).

> Getting cited by ChatGPT isn’t a guaranteed outcome, but you can improve your odds by making your content easily discoverable, authoritative, and clearly citable. Key ideas: Publish well-structured, original, date-stamped content that directly answers specific questions and is indexed by major search engines. Ensure crawl accessibility (allow AI crawlers in robots.txt) and render important content server-side for easier access.

## What is Google AI Overviews?

Google's AI-generated summaries inside Search results, fed by the ordinary Search index rather than by a separate answer crawler, and governed by Search Console settings and the same snippet controls as any other Search feature.

## What is ChatGPT search?

OpenAI's search experience inside ChatGPT, whose eligibility is governed by a dedicated crawler, OAI-SearchBot, that a site can allow or disallow independently of model training.

## When should you choose Google AI Overviews?

Start with AI Overviews if you already do SEO well. Google requires nothing beyond indexing and snippet eligibility, so your existing pages are already eligible. Check that no noindex, nosnippet, low max-snippet or Search Console opt-out holds back the pages you want quoted.

## When should you choose ChatGPT search?

Start with ChatGPT search if your buyers ask ChatGPT for recommendations. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your CDN, decide GPTBot separately as a training question, and set up a way to read ChatGPT's answers, because OpenAI reports nothing to you.

## When is neither the right choice?

Neither surface publishes how it chooses among eligible pages. Being indexed or crawlable makes you eligible; whether you are chosen depends on what the page says and which third-party pages cover the question.

## Where does Attensira fit?

Whatever it takes to win the answer. Attensira reads ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI, with Gemini from Growth, and its rank tracking records each day whether a tracked Google search showed an AI Overview and what it cited.

## What sets Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT search apart?

- A page Google indexes perfectly can still be missing from ChatGPT search because of one robots.txt line or a CDN bot rule, while the reverse failure, crawlable by OpenAI but unindexed by Google, leaves it out of Overviews.
- The new Search Console setting and an OAI-SearchBot disallow live in different files owned by different teams, so a company can leave one surface by accident while auditing the other.
- Asked how to get cited by ChatGPT, ChatGPT relied on OpenAI's own help pages while Perplexity relied on agencies' guides, so the pages worth publishing for a question depend on which surface is answering it.

## What is the one difference that explains the others?

Where each gets its sources. AI Overviews is a feature of Google Search, built on the same index as the ordinary results. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet to be a supporting link. If you already do SEO, your pages are already eligible.

ChatGPT search depends on OpenAI's own crawler. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the user agent used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and states that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. A page Google indexes perfectly can be invisible to ChatGPT search because of one line in robots.txt, or a firewall rule nobody connected to AI. The stored ChatGPT answer above gives the same first step: allow OAI-SearchBot, and check that a CDN is not blocking it.

## What does that mean for the work?

The page work is shared and the access work is not. On both surfaces the pages that win answer the question directly, near the top, with numbers and sources inside the passage. Google adds query fan-out: it may issue multiple related searches across subtopics to build an Overview, so pages that answer the sub-questions behind a search have more chances. OpenAI does not describe ChatGPT's retrieval in that detail, but the same principle holds in practice: a page that owns one clear question is easier to cite than one that covers everything at the same depth.

The access work is all on the ChatGPT side. For AI Overviews you already have Googlebot crawling you. For ChatGPT search you have to allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, make sure your CDN does not challenge it, and decide GPTBot, OpenAI's training crawler, as a separate question. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. Answers move more slowly than that, because a page has to be fetched again and then chosen.

## How do the controls compare?

Each surface now has a clean opt-out, and they live in different places. Google has added a setting to Search Console that decides whether a site appears in, and helps ground, its generative AI features: AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover together. Google says the setting is not used as a ranking signal for ordinary results. To leave ChatGPT search, you disallow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. Neither control touches the other company's surface.

The finer controls exist only on Google's side. nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit what Google may show from a page, so you can keep one passage out of an Overview and leave the rest of the page eligible. OpenAI documents no equivalent: robots.txt works on URL paths, not on passages. And Google-Extended, the token people often reach for, governs Gemini training and grounding. Google states it does not affect inclusion in Search, so it does nothing to AI Overviews.

## What did ChatGPT cite when asked about itself?

Mostly OpenAI. We track "how to get cited by ChatGPT" for our own brand. In the 30 days to 4 October 2026, ChatGPT answered it 57 times, and 1,205 of the 1,831 citations in those answers pointed at help.openai.com. Perplexity answered the same prompt 60 times and leaned on agency and marketing blogs, with no OpenAI domain among its six most influential sources.

For questions about its own behaviour, ChatGPT trusts its maker's pages. That is reasonable, and it also means no third-party guide, ours included, is likely to be cited for that question on ChatGPT. Neither engine named Attensira in any of the 117 answers, and no attensira.com page was cited in them either, which is the honest baseline for a question a vendor's own documentation already answers. The lesson generalises: for each question you care about, find out whose pages each surface already trusts before you decide what to publish.

### Whose pages does ChatGPT trust on how ChatGPT works?

OpenAI's. In the 30 days to 4 October 2026, 57 ChatGPT answers to "how to get cited by ChatGPT" carried 1,831 citations, and most went to OpenAI's own help and documentation pages. Perplexity's 60 answers to the same prompt leaned on agency and marketing blogs instead.

## How do large sites treat the two crawlers?

Very differently. On 3 September 2026 we read the robots.txt files of the top 10,000 domains in a dated Tranco list and parsed 8,036 ([the full study](/data/ai-crawler-robots-access)). Only 156 (1.9%) disallow Googlebot at the root. 467 (5.8%) disallow OAI-SearchBot, three times as many. Few large sites would cut themselves out of Google Search on purpose; a meaningful number have cut themselves out of ChatGPT search, often through blanket rules written against AI training crawlers.

On our own site both crawlers are allowed. In the 30 days to 4 October 2026, Googlebot made 189 requests across 80 pages, and about 86% of the 7,536 requests carrying OpenAI user agents were classed as search indexing, which is OAI-SearchBot's job. OpenAI's search crawler visited far more often than Googlebot did. User agents are self-reported, so treat both counts as directional.

## How can you measure each one?

Google reports appearances; OpenAI reports nothing. Search Console's generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites by 31 August 2026, shows how often your pages appeared in AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. Clicks from those features still sit inside overall Search traffic, under the Web search type. OpenAI's crawler documentation describes no reporting surface for publishers.

There is one practical aid on the ChatGPT side. Some cited links in ChatGPT's answers carry utm_source=chatgpt.com: of the 61 ChatGPT answers we stored on 1 to 4 October 2026, 6 did. Clicks from those links can be counted in ordinary analytics. What neither surface tells you is what the answer said about you, or who it recommended instead.

That leaves reading the answers. For AI Overviews, a tool can load the results page for each tracked search every day and record whether an Overview appeared and which pages it cited, keeping "no Overview" separate from "could not see". For ChatGPT, a tool has to ask your buyers' questions on a schedule and record who is named and what is cited, with the number of answers behind every rate.

## Why does a page appear on one surface and not the other?

On Google, a page that is indexed but never appears in an Overview is usually ranking for the query without answering it in a form the Overview can lift: the answer is buried, split across sections or stated only in an image. On ChatGPT, a page that is never cited is either unreachable by OAI-SearchBot or not among the sources ChatGPT trusts for the question.

The diagnosis differs, which is why the two surfaces need separate checks even when the fix is the same rewrite. Check access first on ChatGPT, because a blocked crawler makes every content fix pointless there. Check snippet rules and the Search Console setting first on Google, because a stray nosnippet or opt-out does the same. Only when both are clean is the page itself the problem.

## What changes when buyers ask longer questions?

The surfaces diverge further. A short search such as "expense software" may trigger an Overview with a definition and a few links. A long question typed into ChatGPT, such as "which expense tool suits a 20-person agency that bills clients for travel", gets a shortlist with reasons, and the brands named are the ones whose pages and third-party coverage speak to agencies, client billing and travel. Overviews reward a clear answer to a common question. ChatGPT rewards being the obvious answer to a specific situation.

For a B2B company that suggests different content for each. Definitions, explainers and how-tos for the searches that trigger Overviews. Use-case pages, comparisons and honest fit statements for the situations buyers describe to ChatGPT. The same site can do both, but rarely by accident, and rarely with the same page.

## Who owns each surface inside a company?

Usually the same person, with different blind spots. The SEO owner already manages Google: indexing, snippets, Search Console. AI Overviews falls naturally into that remit, and most of the work is checking that nothing in the existing setup holds back the pages that should be quoted, now including the generative AI setting.

ChatGPT search often falls between teams. robots.txt is owned by engineering, the CDN by infrastructure, content by marketing, and nobody is reading the answers. The first job on the ChatGPT side is to name one owner who can see all four, and to give that owner a record of what ChatGPT says for the questions that matter.

## How should you report the two to leadership?

As two lines, never one. For AI Overviews: the share of tracked searches that showed an Overview and the share of those that cited your pages, each with the number of days behind it, with Search Console's AI impressions beside them. For ChatGPT: the share of tracked questions where you were named and where your pages were cited, with the number of answers behind each, and utm-tagged referrals beside them. A blended "AI visibility score" hides the one thing leadership needs to know: which surface to work on next.

## FAQ

### Do I need to do anything special for AI Overviews?

No. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to be a supporting link, and Google says no AI text files or special schema are needed.

### What do I need to do for ChatGPT search?

Allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, except as navigational links, and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. Check your firewall and CDN too, because bot protection can block the crawler while robots.txt allows it.

### Can I leave one surface and stay in the other?

Yes. To leave ChatGPT search, disallow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt; Google is unaffected. To leave AI Overviews while staying in ordinary Google results, use the generative AI setting in Search Console, which also covers AI Mode and is not used as a ranking signal for ordinary results. Neither control touches the other company's surface.

### Can I see AI Overview or ChatGPT traffic in my analytics?

Partly. Search Console's generative AI report shows how often your pages appeared in AI features, while clicks from them stay inside Web search totals. For ChatGPT, some cited links carry utm_source=chatgpt.com: 6 of the 61 ChatGPT answers we stored on 1 to 4 October 2026 did. Neither surface tells you what the answer said about you.

### Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google documents Google-Extended as a control over Gemini training and grounding, and states it does not affect inclusion in Google Search. AI Overviews is part of Search, so the Search Console setting or the snippet controls are what limit it.

### Which matters more for a B2B company?

Usually ChatGPT for shortlist questions and AI Overviews for definitional ones. Buyers ask ChatGPT for recommendations and comparisons; Overviews appear on the shorter searches they run while learning a category. Read both for your own buyers' questions before deciding where to spend effort.
