**In short:** ChatGPT search and Perplexity both search the web for each question and cite what they used, each through its own crawler: OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Allow both and you are eligible for both. They then lean on different sources: in 4,524 of our tracked answers, ChatGPT leaned on platform documentation, Perplexity on SEO vendors' blogs and review sites.

## Verdict

Same mechanism, different diets. Both engines search per question, cite what they used and depend on a crawler you control in robots.txt. They differ in which sources they trust: in our readings ChatGPT leaned on platform documentation and vendor sites, Perplexity on SEO vendors' blogs, HubSpot and review sites, and ChatGPT cited about three times as many sources per answer.

### What does ChatGPT check first when asked about Perplexity?

Crawl access. Asked "does my website show up in Perplexity" on 4 October 2026, ChatGPT asked for the URL, then listed PerplexityBot access first. Perplexity's own stored answer that day was off-topic and cited music stores and an internet dictionary, so we do not show it.

Stored ChatGPT answer to “does my website show up in Perplexity”, asked 4 Oct 2026 (n=1 answer, attensira.com workspace, Attensira MCP).

> I can check that, but I need your website URL (domain) first. Once you send it, I can help you assess whether it appears in Perplexity by checking things like: whether Perplexity can discover/crawl your pages (for example, whether PerplexityBot is blocked); whether your pages are likely to be cited as sources in Perplexity answers; whether your content structure, indexing signals, and technical setup are helping AI search visibility.

Named, in order: no brand. Attensira was not named.

## What is ChatGPT search?

OpenAI's search experience inside ChatGPT, fed by a dedicated crawler, OAI-SearchBot, that is documented separately from the crawler used for model training.

## What is Perplexity?

An answer engine that searches the live web for each question and links the pages it used, fed by a crawler that its documentation says is not used to gather training data.

## When should you choose ChatGPT search?

Prioritise ChatGPT search when most of your buyers use ChatGPT. Allow OAI-SearchBot, since OpenAI states that opted-out sites are not shown in its search answers, and make sure the documentation and comparison pages it leans on describe you correctly.

## When should you choose Perplexity?

Prioritise Perplexity when your buyers research in it. It also matters when your category's evidence lives on SEO vendors' guides, review roundups and LinkedIn; in our readings those third-party pages carried far more of Perplexity's citations than ChatGPT's.

## When is neither the right choice?

Neither engine can cite you if your pages say nothing quotable, and neither guarantees inclusion for being crawlable. Both also run user-triggered fetchers that may not follow robots.txt, so access control alone is not a content strategy.

## Where does Attensira fit?

Whatever it takes to win the answer. Attensira reads ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI, with Gemini from Growth, records the sources each engine leans on, and drafts fixes to your pages for your approval.

## What sets ChatGPT search and Perplexity apart?

- Because ChatGPT lists far more sources per answer, a page can appear in its source list without standing out, while a Perplexity citation is one of a handful the reader actually sees.
- Perplexity's mistakes are easier to catch than ChatGPT's because its sources sit on the page: on 4 October 2026 its answer about Perplexity visibility cited music stores and a fan wiki.
- Off-site work splits by engine: the third-party pages Perplexity leaned on in our category barely overlap with the documentation ChatGPT leaned on, so one outreach list does not serve both.

## How do ChatGPT search and Perplexity find your pages?

The same way, through different crawlers. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the user agent used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and states that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot as designed to surface and link websites in its search results, and recommends allowing it, and its published IP ranges, to ensure your site appears. Both say their search crawler is separate from model training.

So the first requirement is identical: allow both crawlers in robots.txt and at your firewall. Both vendors say a robots.txt change takes about a day to apply. Both also run a user-triggered fetcher, ChatGPT-User and Perplexity-User, that reads a page when a person asks about it and may not follow robots.txt. When we asked ChatGPT whether a site shows up in Perplexity, it put crawler access first too.

## If the mechanism is the same, what differs?

What each engine trusts, and how much of it each shows. Neither publishes how it chooses sources, so the only way to see the difference is to read many answers to the same questions. We track 61 prompts about AI search for our own brand on both engines. In the 30 days to 4 October 2026, ChatGPT answered them 2,349 times and Perplexity 2,175 times.

The first difference is volume. ChatGPT's answers carried 78,667 citations, about 33.5 per answer; Perplexity's carried 21,713, about 10.0 per answer. Part of that gap is format: ChatGPT lists the sources it consulted as well as the ones it cites inline, and our count includes both. Even so, a ChatGPT answer gives a page more chances to appear somewhere in its source list, and fewer chances to stand out in it.

The second difference is diet. For each prompt we keep the six sources that most influenced each engine's answers. On ChatGPT, help.openai.com was one of the six for 16 of the 61 prompts, developers.google.com for 14 and github.com for 10: platform documentation first. On Perplexity, semrush.com was one of the six for 14 prompts, blog.hubspot.com for 10 and seranking.com for 8: SEO vendors' blogs and marketing guides first. Same questions, same days, different reading lists.

### Do the two engines trust the same pages for one question?

Barely. Over 30 days of answers to "does my website show up in Perplexity", the two engines' six most influential sources shared one domain. Neither named Attensira or cited attensira.com in any of the 117 answers.

## What does that mean for your own category?

That off-site work splits by engine. On your own site, both engines reward the same things: crawlable pages that answer a buyer's question near the top, with numbers and sources inside the passage, on the page that owns the question. Both cite pages, not domains, so the right page for each question matters more than the site's overall strength.

Off your site the difference is large. If Perplexity matters to your buyers, the third-party pages it leans on in your category are where you need to be mentioned; in ours, that meant SEO vendors' guides, HubSpot's marketing blog and review sites. If ChatGPT matters, official documentation and the vendor pages it already trusts carry more weight. Read your own category's sources before deciding where to spend effort. Ours will not be yours, and the per-prompt lists differ even inside one category: for "does my website show up in Perplexity", the two engines' six most influential sources shared exactly one domain.

## How does each engine treat our own brand?

In opposite directions. In the 30 days to 4 October 2026, ChatGPT named Attensira in 99 of its 2,349 answers (4.2%) and cited an attensira.com page in 154 (6.6%). Perplexity named us in 98 of 2,175 (4.5%) and cited us in 85 (3.9%). ChatGPT reads our pages more often than it recommends us; Perplexity, slightly, the reverse. A single blended number would have hidden both.

One caveat matters more than the rates. All 197 namings came from the three prompts that ask about Attensira by name. On the other 58 prompts, neither engine named us once. For a young brand that is the normal state, and it is the honest starting line for any plan: you are cited before you are recommended, and you are recommended where you are already known.

## How do they differ for a person asking?

Perplexity shows its sources on every answer, as a list the reader can open. ChatGPT shows citations inline when it searches, plus a longer list of sources consulted. A Perplexity reader is more likely to notice your link even when you are not named; a ChatGPT reader is more likely to notice a name in a shortlist. A brand that only wins one kind of presence will look visible on one engine and absent on the other.

## Where do the engines get things wrong?

Both make mistakes, and Perplexity's are easier to see because its sources are on the page. On 4 October 2026, Perplexity's stored answer to "does my website show up in Perplexity" was a flat "No", with no question about which site, and its six cited sources were two music stores, a slide-sharing site, a journal, an internet dictionary and a fan wiki. Retrieval had matched the word, not the question.

ChatGPT's answer to the same prompt the same day asked for the URL before judging anything, then listed what it would check. That is the better answer, but it is not a reading of your site either. For a brand, the lesson is to read answers, not just count them. A mention rate cannot tell you that an engine misread the question, cited irrelevant pages, or confused you with a similarly named company.

### Who does each engine send you to when you ask it to check your brand?

Different camps. Over 30 days of answers to "check if ChatGPT mentions my brand", ChatGPT leaned on OpenAI's own pages, while Perplexity leaned on SEO-tool vendors' guides, with Ahrefs' the most cited. Ahrefs was also the brand named most often across both engines.

## What did we see in our own logs?

Different crawl volumes, and different live behaviour. In the same 30 days, PerplexityBot made 621 requests to attensira.com across 331 pages, and no request was labelled Perplexity-User. Of the 7,536 requests carrying OpenAI user agents, about 86% were classed as search indexing, OAI-SearchBot's job. Both crawlers read hundreds of our pages; OpenAI's did so far more often. User agents are self-reported, and crawling is not citation, but it is a reminder that each engine's view of your site is refreshed on its own schedule.

If your logs show one crawler and not the other, check robots.txt and your CDN's bot rules before you touch a single page. A page an engine cannot fetch is a page it cannot cite, however good it is.

## How do the live fetchers differ?

Both engines read a page live when a person asks about it, and both say this fetcher may not follow robots.txt. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to ChatGPT-User, because its fetches are initiated by a user. Perplexity says Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt for the same reason, and that it may link the page it fetched in its answer. A live fetch is a person reading an answer that needed your page, so it is worth counting separately from crawls; on our site in this window, Perplexity-User did not appear at all.

## Which questions should you read on both?

Three kinds, at minimum. Shortlist questions, such as "best tools for a 20-person agency", where the answer is a list of names and the mention rate is what matters. Comparison questions, such as your product against a named competitor, where each engine shows whose framing it trusts. And explainer questions, such as "how does this work" or "what does it cost", where the answer quotes sources and the citation rate is what matters.

Twenty to thirty questions of each kind, read daily on both engines, is enough to see the shape within a few weeks. Fewer than that, and a single odd answer, like the Perplexity one above, can move a rate enough to send you after the wrong problem. Ask any tool that tracks both engines three things: does it report them separately with the number of answers behind each rate, does it store the answers so you can read them, and does it record which sources each engine cited. Those three are what made the differences on this page visible.

## How should you work on both?

In this order. Confirm both crawlers are allowed in robots.txt and not challenged by your CDN. Pick the buyer questions that matter and read both engines' answers to them for a few weeks, recording who is named and which sources are cited, with the number of answers behind each rate. Fix the pages that should own each question. Then work on the sources: for each question, the two or three third-party pages each engine leans on, and whether you are on them.

Report the two engines separately. Averaging ChatGPT and Perplexity hides exactly the differences that tell you where to work.

## Where is the honest limit of this comparison?

It is one category, read from one brand's prompt set, over 30 days. Both engines change their retrieval without notice, and the sources they lean on in your category may be entirely different from ours. What generalises is the method: the same questions, both engines, every day, counted with n, sources recorded. What does not generalise is any specific figure on this page.

## FAQ

### Is Perplexity or ChatGPT better for brand visibility?

Neither is better; they reach different people and trust different sources. ChatGPT matters wherever your buyers use it. Perplexity matters when your buyers research in it, and in our readings it leaned far more on SEO vendors' blogs, HubSpot and review sites, which changes where you need to be mentioned.

### How do I get my site into ChatGPT search and Perplexity?

Allow OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt and at your firewall, make sure your important pages answer buyers' questions plainly near the top, and earn mentions on the third-party pages each engine already cites for your category. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, except as navigational links.

### Why does Perplexity cite different sources from ChatGPT?

Neither publishes how it chooses. Across our 61 tracked prompts in the 30 days to 4 October 2026, help.openai.com was one of ChatGPT's six most influential sources for 16 prompts and developers.google.com for 14. On Perplexity, semrush.com was for 14 prompts, blog.hubspot.com for 10 and seranking.com for 8.

### Does ChatGPT cite more sources than Perplexity?

In our readings, yes, by a wide margin: 78,667 citations across 2,349 ChatGPT answers against 21,713 across 2,175 Perplexity answers in the 30 days to 4 October 2026. ChatGPT's count includes its "sources consulted" list as well as inline citations, so compare the shape, not the exact ratio.

### How quickly do changes show up?

Both vendors say a robots.txt change takes about a day: OpenAI about 24 hours for OAI-SearchBot, Perplexity up to 24 hours. Answers change more slowly, because a page has to be fetched again and then chosen. Read weeks of answers before judging a change.

### Do consumer "Perplexity vs ChatGPT" comparisons apply here?

Only partly. Consumer comparisons judge answer quality, speed and features. For a brand the questions are narrower: can each engine fetch your pages, which sources does it trust for your category, and how often does it name and cite you. Those differ by category, so measure your own.
