**In short:** AEO and GEO describe nearly the same work: making your brand and pages the material AI answers draw on. GEO was coined in a 2023 research paper with a benchmark; AEO grew from practice. The useful difference is the outcome each word points at: being cited as a source, or being named inside the answer.

## Verdict

Two labels for overlapping work, arriving from different directions. GEO was born in a research paper with a benchmark and points at visibility inside generated text. AEO was born in practice and points at being the cited source behind an answer. The tasks are nearly the same; the number each asks you to report is not.

### How does an engine define GEO?

By being cited. Asked "what is generative engine optimization" on 4 October 2026, Perplexity defined GEO by the outcome people usually attach to AEO, which is exactly the mix-up that lets a team report whichever number moved.

Stored Perplexity answer to “what is generative engine optimization”, asked 4 Oct 2026 (n=1 answer, attensira.com workspace, Attensira MCP).

> Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring and optimizing content so AI systems cite, summarize, or include it in their generated answers, rather than just ranking for traditional search results. It focuses on being a trusted source that AI tools draw from when answering user queries.

### How does an engine define AEO?

By the other word's outcome. Asked for the best AEO tools on 3 October 2026, ChatGPT framed AEO as appearing in answers, which is GEO's success condition. The two definitions on this page cross over exactly.

Stored ChatGPT answer to “best answer engine optimization tools”, asked 3 Oct 2026 (n=1 answer, attensira.com workspace, Attensira MCP).

> If by Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) you mean optimizing your brand/content to appear in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews/AI Mode, and Copilot, these are the tools I’d shortlist in 2026.

## How do AEO and GEO compare?

Each cell cites a claim in the Sources section below.

| Criterion | AEO | GEO |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Origin and evidence** | | |
| Where the term came from | Practice first; studied later as a practice analogous to SEO | Named in a research paper as a new optimisation paradigm |
| Date of the defining work | A June 2026 log study of ChatGPT referral traffic | Submitted to arXiv in November 2023 |
| Evidence base | Server logs of one domain, with its untreated pages as the control | GEO-bench, a benchmark of user queries and relevant web sources |
| Headline published result | Partly · ×1.82 more ChatGPT referrals, called suggestive, not conclusive (placebo p=0.16) | Partly · Up to 40% more visibility in generative engine responses, on its own benchmark |
| **What each optimises for** | | |
| What counts as a win | Referral traffic from an answer engine that cites you | Being visible inside the generated response itself |
| Prerequisite on Google's AI features | Indexed and snippet-eligible, like any supporting link | Nothing extra; Google states no additional requirements apply |

## What is AEO?

Answer engine optimisation, a practitioner term for making a page the material an answer engine cites when it responds. It entered the research literature as a practice analogous to search engine optimisation, studied through the referral traffic answer engines send to websites.

## What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation, a paradigm named in a 2023 research paper for improving how visible a source is inside the text a generative engine produces, published together with its own benchmark, GEO-bench.

## When should you choose AEO?

Say AEO when you are accountable for attribution. That means a link in the source list and a referral you can see in your own logs, which suits teams that already think in citations and traffic.

## When should you choose GEO?

Say GEO when you are accountable for what the answer says. That holds whether or not anyone clicks, and the word comes with a citable academic origin and a published benchmark.

## When is neither the right choice?

Neither label matters if the page has nothing quotable in it. Both bodies of work point at the same prerequisite: a page that is indexed, fetchable and specific enough to be reproduced without the paragraph around it.

## Where does Attensira fit?

Attensira reports the two outcomes this page separates, named and cited, per engine with n, on prompts like "best answer engine optimization tools", and its crew works on the roundups and pages that decide those shortlists.

## What sets AEO and GEO apart?

- GEO was named with a lab benchmark in 2023; the AEO evidence cited here is a June 2026 study of live referral logs, and it warns that headline AEO multiples overstate the effect.
- Each engine defines one term by the other's outcome: Perplexity defined GEO by being cited, and ChatGPT defined AEO by appearing in answers.
- Neither word survives a surface change equally: AEO needs engines to keep showing sources, GEO only needs answers to contain text.

## Where do the two terms come from?

From opposite directions. GEO has a founding document. "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", by Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan and Deshpande, was submitted to arXiv in November 2023. It introduces GEO as a paradigm to help content creators improve their visibility in generative engine responses, and it ships GEO-bench, a large benchmark of user queries across domains with the web sources relevant to each. A corpus and a method are attached to the word.

AEO has no equivalent document. It grew in practice, among agencies and tool vendors, and reached the research literature descriptively. A June 2026 arXiv paper treats answer engine optimisation as the practice that appeared once answer engines such as ChatGPT began sending measurable referral traffic to the open web, and studies it through server logs.

So one term has a benchmark and the other has a practitioner community and a log study. Neither is worthless and neither is authoritative.

## Do AI engines treat AEO and GEO as one category?

Yes, in our readings. We track both shopping questions on ChatGPT and Perplexity, and in the 30 days to 4 October 2026 both led with Profound at nearly the same rate: in 90 of 115 answers to one question and 92 of 114 to the other.

That is what you would expect if the engines learned from pages that treat AEO and GEO as two names for one category. A buyer who asks for either word sees the same competitors, so a vendor that optimises for only one of the two terms is splitting a single audience.

The same readings show where the shortlist comes from. ChatGPT's 57 answers to the AEO question carried 2,481 citations, and the most-used domains were vendor roundups and vendors: otterly.ai, a Scrunch file host, aeo-rankings.com, xseek.io. Attensira was named in none of the 229 answers to either question and cited in none. No edit to our own pages fixes that. A brand missing from a category list gets onto it by being included, accurately, on the roundups each engine reads, and then by reading the same prompt for weeks to see whether the list moves.

Read the answers, not only the rate. One Perplexity sample to the AEO question on 3 October 2026 recommended a single obscure tool and cited pages that had nothing to do with the question, including a music profile. A short, jargon-heavy query can retrieve badly.

## What does the research actually measure?

Different things, with different instruments, and neither is settled.

The GEO paper's headline is that its methods can boost visibility by up to 40% in generative engine responses. That is a benchmark result: a measured change in how a source appears in generated answers, on a fixed corpus, under specific edits such as adding citations, quotations and statistics.

The AEO study measures traffic. It followed ChatGPT referrals to one high-traffic domain before and after AEO changes, using the domain's untreated pages as a control for platform growth. Raw referrals grew 5.7× while untreated pages grew 3.5×, so most of the "growth" was the platform. The model put the intervention's effect at ×1.82, but a placebo test gave p=0.16, and the authors call the result suggestive, not conclusive, warning that headline AEO multiples overstate the causal effect.

Read together they say something modest: structure and evidence on a page change how it appears in generated text, and traffic numbers quoted without a control mostly measure the engine's own growth.

## Does Google require anything called AEO or GEO?

No. Google's documentation for its AI features is plain: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimisations necessary. To appear as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet. There is no AEO checklist and no GEO certification behind that door.

Anyone who says a platform has published requirements under either acronym is describing their own method. Ask which document says so, and check its date.

## Where do the two words genuinely part?

In the success condition. AEO points at attribution: the win is being a source in the citation list, a link and a referral your logs can record. Without a citation, AEO has nothing to count. GEO points at the text: the win is appearing inside the answer, whether or not anyone clicks and whether or not a source list exists. That is broader, harder to instrument, and the only one of the two that still means something on a surface that shows no sources.

These outcomes move apart, and on our own brand they do. Across all 4,524 answers to the 61 prompts we track, in the 30 days to 4 October 2026, an attensira.com page was cited in 239 and Attensira was named in 197, all 197 in answers to the 3 prompts that name us (n=198). An AEO dashboard would show us slightly ahead of a GEO dashboard. Neither would be wrong; each describes a different event.

The engines blur the line themselves. Perplexity defines GEO by being cited, and ChatGPT defines AEO by appearing in answers, as the two stored answers on this page show.

## How should you read a vendor that sells one of the terms?

By asking what it measures. A vendor that sells AEO should show, prompt by prompt, which of your pages were cited and how often, with the number of answers behind each rate. A vendor that sells GEO should show the answers themselves, how you were described and how often you were named. If it offers a single blended visibility score, ask how the score would describe a brand that, like ours, is cited more often than it is named.

Three questions sort most proposals in a few minutes. Which prompts will you track, and who chose them? A list written by the vendor to flatter its own results is a sales asset, not a measurement. How many answers sit behind each rate, per engine? A percentage from a handful of answers moves by whole points when one answer changes. And can I read the stored answer behind any number on the dashboard? If the answer to the last question is no, nothing else on the dashboard can be checked, whichever acronym is printed above it.

The word on the proposal is cheap. Stored answers with a sample size are not.

## Why do the two words produce different reporting habits?

Because each makes a different number the obvious one for a slide. A team that says AEO builds its reporting around sources and clicks: which URLs were attributed, what the referral logs show, which page to fix next. That habit is good at finding the page and bad at noticing that an assistant now describes your category in a competitor's terms while citing nobody at all.

A team that says GEO builds its reporting around the answer text: sample the prompts, read what came back, track how you are described. That habit is good at noticing framing and bad at pointing to the page to change, because answer text rarely maps cleanly to one URL.

Each habit is blind exactly where the other looks. The fix is not a better acronym. It is reporting both units side by side, per engine: the answers you were named in, and the answers that linked one of your pages.

## How will the distinction age?

GEO is the more general term and AEO the more measurable one. AEO depends on engines continuing to cite sources, which today's answer engines mostly do and which is a product decision a vendor can reverse. A surface that stops showing sources does not make AEO wrong; it makes it unmeasurable there. GEO depends only on answers containing text, which is a safer bet, at the cost of being harder to attribute to any one piece of work.

If you expect source lists to persist and grow, AEO's measurement story gets stronger. If you expect assistants to answer more and cite less, GEO describes what remains. Either way the work does not change, which is why the next section is the same list under both names.

## What does the work look like under either name?

Five things, whichever word is on the plan. Let the crawlers that feed answer engines fetch your pages. Write passages that answer a buyer's question directly, so a model can quote them without the paragraph around them. Publish the comparison and alternatives pages your category's buyers ask about. Earn accurate mentions on the third-party pages the engines already cite for your category, which for AEO and GEO tools means the roundups above. And measure each change per engine, named and cited separately, with n, for weeks rather than days.

None of those steps is specific to AEO or to GEO, which is the strongest practical argument that the vocabulary is not the interesting part. Pick the word your audience uses, write down both numbers before you start, and report both.

## FAQ

### Is AEO just GEO with a different name?

Close enough that running them as two workstreams is a mistake, but not identical in origin. GEO was coined in a 2023 arXiv paper that shipped its own benchmark. AEO grew in practice and entered the research literature later, as a practice analogous to SEO that is studied through the referral traffic answer engines send.

### Do ChatGPT and Perplexity treat AEO and GEO as the same thing?

In our readings, yes. Asked for the best AEO tools and the best GEO tools, the two engines led with the same vendor at nearly the same rate: Profound in 90 of 115 answers to one question and 92 of 114 to the other, in the 30 days to 4 October 2026, in the attensira.com workspace.

### Which term should I use with a buyer?

The one your buyer already uses, defined in the next sentence. Neither word appears in Google's documentation for its AI features, so neither carries borrowed authority. What carries authority is saying which number you will report, over which questions, with how many answers behind it.

### Does Google require anything called AEO or GEO?

No. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimisations necessary. A page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, which is ordinary SEO.

### Is there evidence that either one works?

Some, and none of it settled. The 2023 GEO paper reports up to 40% more visibility on its own benchmark. A June 2026 study of one domain's ChatGPT referrals found a ×1.82 level increase after AEO changes, then called the effect suggestive, not conclusive, because a placebo test gave p=0.16.

### Why does the choice of word matter if the work is the same?

Because each word makes a different number the obvious one to report. AEO points at citations and referrals; GEO points at what the answer says. A team that has not chosen will report whichever moved, so write down both numbers, per engine and with n, before the work starts.
