**In short:** ChatGPT ads, announced by OpenAI in January 2026, appear below answers when relevant, labelled as sponsored, and OpenAI says they do not influence the answer itself. To prepare, decide which questions matter to you, build landing pages that answer them, set up conversion tracking, and keep working on the organic answer, which ads do not change.

**ChatGPT, asked "how much does AI search visibility cost" on 4 Oct 2026**

> If by “AI search visibility” you mean getting your business/website mentioned and cited in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude, etc., pricing in 2026 varies a lot depending on how much is actually being done. … The valuable part is the work that actually improves the underlying signals.

For years, marketers asked when ChatGPT would carry ads. In January 2026 OpenAI answered: it would test them. Since then the questions have shifted to the practical ones. Where do they appear? Who sees them? Do they change what ChatGPT recommends? And what should a company do now?

This post separates what OpenAI has said from what it has not, and lays out the preparation that pays off whatever the ads programme turns into.

### What has OpenAI said about ads in ChatGPT?

On 2026-01-16 OpenAI published its approach to advertising. The table at the top summarises it with its sources. Two points it leaves out matter as much: OpenAI said Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions would not include ads, and conversations are kept private from advertisers and data is not sold to them.

OpenAI framed these as principles, including "answer independence" and "conversation privacy". It has since announced that ads are expanding to more markets, including Europe. If you plan around ads, read OpenAI's current announcements for your own country, because availability and formats are still changing.

### What has OpenAI not said?

It is just as important to know the gaps, because a lot of confident advice fills them with guesses.

- **How targeting works in detail**: which signals from a conversation decide which ad shows.

- **Self-serve access**: who can buy ads, through what interface, at what minimum.

- **Pricing models** and auction mechanics.

- **Measurement**: what reporting advertisers get, and how conversions are attributed.

Each gap is a question to put to any ads programme before you commit budget: what decides which conversation shows my ad, what does a click cost, and what will I see afterwards? Until OpenAI answers them in writing for your market, plan a small test rather than a channel.

Anyone selling a "ChatGPT ads strategy" that depends on specific answers to these questions should be asked for their source.

### Do ads change the organic answer?

According to OpenAI, no. This is the single most important fact for planning. An ad sits below the answer. The answer itself, including which brands and products it recommends, is decided separately. OpenAI says the same about shopping: product results are "selected independently" and are not ads.

So there are two placements, with two different routes in:

| Placement | How you get in | What decides it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The answer | Organic: be the best-described option in the sources ChatGPT reads | Your pages, reviews, guides, listings |
| The ad below it | Paid: buy the placement where available | The ads programme |

A buyer reads the answer first. If the answer recommends three competitors and your ad sits below it, you are paying to be the fourth option, labelled as sponsored. Ads are a complement to being in the answer, not a substitute.

The answer at the top of this page is the placement you can work on today. Asked "how much does AI search visibility cost" on 2026-10-04, ChatGPT built its answer from pricing guides and agency rate cards, citing citedly.co, nuoptima.com, sempite.com and therankcollective.com inline. Those pages decided what it said. Under OpenAI's stated policy, an ad would sit below that answer and leave it unchanged.

### What should you prepare now?

#### Know which conversations matter

Ads are triggered by relevance to the conversation. Before you can buy anything sensibly, you need a list of the questions your buyers ask ChatGPT, in their words, and an idea of how valuable each is. That same list is what you need to measure and improve your organic presence. It is never wasted work.

#### Know where you stand in the answer today

Read the answers to those questions, several times each, and count how often you are named and who is named instead. If you are already in most answers, ads add reach at the margin. If you are in none, ads would put you below a shortlist that excludes you, and the organic work is the higher priority. Our own workspace is an example of the second case: across 61 tracked questions about our category, we were named only on the three questions that contain our name.

#### Build landing pages that answer the question

An ad click from ChatGPT arrives with context: the visitor just read an answer about a specific need. A generic home page wastes that. For each high-value question, have a page that answers it directly, states the facts a buyer would check and offers one clear next step. The same pages are candidates for citation in the organic answer.

#### Set up measurement before you spend

Make sure you can see ChatGPT traffic in your analytics. ChatGPT already adds a `utm_source=chatgpt.com` parameter to many of the links it shows, so organic visits can be separated out today. Set up conversion tracking on the landing pages, so that if you do run ads you can compare paid and organic visitors on the same pages.

#### Fix what ChatGPT says about you

An ad next to an answer that states your price wrongly is money spent on confusion. Check the facts ChatGPT states about your brand and products, and fix the sources of anything wrong first. See [fixing what AI gets wrong about your brand](/blog/fixing-ai-misrepresentations-of-your-brand).

#### Decide your budget logic

Treat ChatGPT ads as an experiment with a fixed budget and a clear question, such as "do visitors from ChatGPT ads convert better or worse than visitors from Google search ads to the same page?" Decide in advance what result would make you continue.

### What does a ChatGPT-ready landing page contain?

A visitor arriving from a ChatGPT answer, paid or organic, has already read a summary and a recommendation. The landing page has to confirm what they read and take them one step further. That means:

- **A first line that answers the question they asked**, in the same terms, so they know they are in the right place.

- **The facts they will check**: price or pricing model, what is included, who it is for, any limits. Stated plainly, with a date if they change.

- **A short comparison with the obvious alternative**, honest about when the alternative fits better.

- **Proof that is specific**: a number with its source, a policy, a demonstration. Not a wall of logos.

- **One next step.** A trial, a demo, a product page. Not five.

Pages built this way serve both placements. An engine reading them for the organic answer finds quotable facts, and a visitor clicking an ad finds the continuation of the conversation they just had.

### How should agencies advise clients on ChatGPT ads?

With the same split. First, measure where the client stands in the organic answers for the questions that matter to their business, with sample sizes. Second, fix the organic gaps that are cheapest to close: wrong facts, missing pages, absent listings. Third, if ads are available in the client's market and the questions are valuable, propose a fixed-budget test with a stated success measure.

What an agency should avoid is selling ads as a fix for not being in the answer. OpenAI's own principle of answer independence means the ad will not change the answer, and a client who discovers that after the invoice will remember who sold it to them.

### How will you know if ChatGPT ads work for you?

Define it before you spend. A useful test compares the same landing page reached three ways: from organic ChatGPT answers, from ChatGPT ads and from your existing search ads. If ad visitors convert as well as the others at a cost you can accept, continue. If they convert worse, the likely reason is that the answer above the ad already sent buyers elsewhere, and the organic work comes first. Keep the test small, run it for a fixed period, and write down the result either way.

### What about commerce brands?

Store owners face the same split, more sharply. Shopping answers in ChatGPT show products with prices and merchants, and OpenAI says those results are not ads. A sponsored product shown below can add reach, but the products in the answer are chosen on data, reviews and relevance. The [ChatGPT shopping checklist](/blog/chatgpt-shopping-optimization) covers the organic side.

### What are the risks of moving early?

- **Spending to cover an organic gap.** If you are not in the answer, an ad below it is an expensive way to be the fourth option.

- **Unclear measurement.** Until reporting is well understood, it is hard to know what you bought.

- **Brand context.** Your ad appears next to an answer you did not write. Read the answers for your target questions before you buy next to them.

None of these is a reason not to test. They are reasons to test with a fixed budget and a question you want answered.

### How does Attensira fit in?

Attensira does not buy ChatGPT ads. Its paid search work today is Google Ads Search campaigns: the agent researches keywords, drafts the campaign and files it for approval, and nothing is spent until a signed-in person approves it in the app. Ad spend is paid to Google from your own billing, never from credits.

For ChatGPT, Attensira works on the part ads do not change: the answer. Before you buy a slot below the answer, it shows whether the answer already names you: for each question you track, on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI, with Gemini from Growth, who is named and which pages decide it, and does the work to put you in it, with your approval: page fixes, new pages, pitches and listings. That is the service of an SEO agency at the price of a tool.

See [Google Ads with Attensira](/features/google-ads), or run the [free audit](/audit) to see whether ChatGPT names you before you consider paying to sit below its answer.

## What has OpenAI said, and what has it left open?

Where ads show, who sees them and that they leave the answer alone are published. Targeting, pricing and reporting are not. Plan around the first three, and keep the last three as open questions until OpenAI publishes them.

## What does the groundwork look like as work items?

None of it needs an ads account. In Attensira the preparation lands in the Inbox as rows: a page change to approve, a pitch to a page ChatGPT cites, and a connection only you can make.

**Inbox**

- **Approve** (writer): Rewrite the pricing page's first line to answer “how much does it cost”
- **Approve** (outreach): Pitch the roundup ChatGPT cites for your category question
It names three competitors and not you.
- **Do** (analyst): Connect Google Search Console
So clicks and positions sit beside the answers on the same pages.

## FAQ

### Where do ads appear in ChatGPT?

OpenAI said ads would appear at the bottom of ChatGPT answers when a sponsored product or service is relevant to the conversation, shown separately from the answer and clearly labelled as sponsored. They are not part of the answer text.

### Do ChatGPT ads change what the answer recommends?

OpenAI says no. One of the principles it published is answer independence, meaning ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. An ad can sit next to the answer, but buying one does not put your brand inside the answer.

### Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

When OpenAI announced its test in January 2026, ads were for logged-in adults in the United States on the free and Go tiers, while the Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise subscriptions would not include ads. OpenAI has since announced expansions to further markets, so check its current announcements for your country.

### Can Attensira run ChatGPT ads for me?

No. Attensira's paid search work today is Google Ads Search campaigns, drafted by the agent and approved by a person in the app before anything is spent. For ChatGPT, Attensira works on the organic answer, the part ads do not change.

### Should I wait for ChatGPT ads before working on AI visibility?

No. Ads and the organic answer are separate, and the organic answer is what shoppers and buyers read first. The groundwork for ads, such as clear landing pages and knowing which questions matter, is the same groundwork that helps you appear in answers.
